Seafood Packaging Solutions

Advanced seafood packaging solutions designed to preserve freshness, extend shelf life, prevent leakage, and protect products throughout storage and transportation.

Protect Seafood Quality, Freshness & Shelf Life

Proper packaging is critical for maintaining the quality and safety of seafood products. The right solution can help extend shelf life, support rapid freezing, inhibit microbial growth, reduce freezer burn, and protect seafood from contamination, dehydration, and oxidation.

Effective seafood packaging can also contain odors and liquids such as blood or brine, helping maintain product integrity throughout storage, transportation, and retail.

Point Five Packaging offers several advanced seafood packaging technologies:

  • Vacuum Skin Packaging (VSP): Commonly used for fish filets and other seafood products, VSP combines a transparent flexible film with a backing material to tightly secure the product. This helps maximize shelf life while creating an attractive retail presentation.
  • Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP): Replaces the atmosphere inside the package with gases such as carbon dioxide or nitrogen, significantly reducing residual oxygen to help extend shelf life while maintaining freshness and product quality.
  • Tray Sealing: Seals seafood products within a tray using transparent or printed plastic film. This solution is particularly well suited for frozen or shelf-stable seafood products where significant shelf-life extension is not required.
  • Tray Stretch Sealing: Uses specialized stretch film to create a hermetic seal around the tray. This helps contain liquids, prevent leakage, and maintain product weight and integrity during storage and transportation.

Choosing the Right Seafood Packaging

The ideal seafood packaging solution depends on the product itself as well as how it will be stored, transported, displayed, and ultimately consumed.

Material
The type, size, weight, and handling requirements of the seafood should guide material selection. Delicate products may require additional protection, while common options include A-PET, C-PET, and PP trays and containers. Packaging for fresh seafood must also account for applicable food-safety requirements, including oxygen-transmission considerations.

Size & Shape
Packaging dimensions can directly affect storage, shelf space, and transportation efficiency. Standardized formats can help manufacturers make more efficient use of shipping containers and available retail space.

Sustainability
Recyclable, compostable, biodegradable, and other more sustainable packaging options can be considered based on the product’s performance requirements and sustainability goals.

Branding & Presentation
Clear, attractive packaging can improve product visibility and help seafood products stand out at retail. Packaging can also communicate important information such as nutritional content, product origin, and freshness.

Regulatory Requirements
Seafood packaging and labeling should be selected with applicable FDA, USDA, and other regulatory requirements in mind.

With expertise in MAP, VSP, tray sealing, and other advanced packaging technologies, Point Five Packaging can help determine the right combination of materials and equipment to protect seafood products while improving shelf life, functionality, and presentation.
